Information
What does the NASA study say, and what are its effects at home?
The idea of air-purifying plants is based on NASA's 1989 "Clean Air Study," which observed that in small, enclosed test chambers, certain plants reduced volatile organic compounds like benzene and formaldehyde. However, a comprehensive evaluation by researchers from Drexel University in 2019 showed that achieving the same effect in a normal home would require a large number of plants per square meter, and that regular ventilation is far more effective. Therefore, plants don't replace ventilation; however, they make a real contribution to indoor living in terms of humidity balance, visual freshness, and overall well-being. The most popular species for this purpose in collections include Schefflera, rubber plant, Livistona palm, Dieffenbachia, and Monstera.
Laboratory findings
NASA 1989: In a sealed chamber, some plants reduced pollutants.
Real home conditions
The effect is limited in a normal house; ventilation is much more effective.
Real contribution
Maintaining humidity balance is valuable for visual appeal, freshness, and overall well-being.
