"Houseplant" and "house flower" are the same thing.
In everyday language, "houseplants" and "house flowers" are used interchangeably; both refer to indoor plants grown in pots. Flowering species (such as orchids and African violets) form a separate group and are included under the heading "potted plants" in our collection.
Choice based on the context.
Choosing Houseplants Based on Light Conditions
Light is the biggest determinant of a houseplant's longevity; even the most showy species will weaken in the wrong light. Choose one considering which direction your house or office faces and how much natural light it receives throughout the day.
dimly lit corners
For areas away from windows and with indirect light, Schefflera, Aglaonema, and Syngonium are the most tolerant species; they can live in dimly lit environments, but not in complete darkness.
Medium level, indirect light
Monstera, Ficus Elastica, Dieffenbachia, and Alocasia grow best in bright but indirect light; they can be placed 1-2 meters inside from a window.
Plenty of direct light
Euphorbia (giant cactus) and Croton, thanks to their succulent nature, thrive in direct sunlight on windowsills; they may lose their color and form in low light.
Species that prefer high humidity.
Alocasia and Phlebodium thrive in humid areas such as bathrooms or kitchens; in dry, heated rooms, frequent misting of their leaves is recommended.
Selection based on location.
Houseplants by Size: From Small to Large
The plants in the collection are offered at different heights, from 80 cm to 200 cm. The correct height ensures that the plant remains healthy for years and looks proportionate in the space.
Choosing a houseplant based on size.
| Size range | Suitable place | Examples of species |
|---|---|---|
| Small (tabletop, 20-40 cm) | Console table, coffee table, desk | Maranta, Pilea, Aglaonema, succulent and cactus species |
| Medium (80-120 cm) | Next to the sofa, office corner, living room entrance | Monstera, Schefflera, Diffenbahia, Chamaedorea, Licuala |
| Large (150-200 cm) | Spacious lounge area, reception, high ceilings. | Yucca deluxe, Strelitzia deluxe, Ficus Lyrata, Dracaena 4 stems |
| Collectible item | Desk, display case; a permanent and decorative focal point. | Ficus Bonsai Ginseng |
Measure the space before ordering the large plant.
Ensure that a Yucca or Strelitzia 150 cm or taller fits within the ceiling height and pot diameter (usually 30-40 cm); large potted plants are difficult to relocate after delivery.
Purpose of sending
To whom and in what situations is a houseplant given as a gift?
Houseplants are a lasting alternative when cut flowers will wilt in a week. The following pairings are compiled from some of the most frequent orders we receive at our workshop.
To the new home and office
A large Monstera or Yucca plant sent to someone moving into a new home or office will instantly fill the space and become a gift remembered for months. The office plants category also includes more compact options for desks and reception areas.
Get well soon and happy birthday!
Cut flowers are often unacceptable in hospital rooms; potted plants, being odorless and requiring little care, are more suitable for get-well gifts. For birthdays, small to medium-sized plants create a longer-lasting memory compared to cut flowers.
To yourself and your home
Houseplants are most often bought "for oneself"; medium and large varieties are preferred by those who want to complete their living room decor or liven up a corner. If you're wondering which ones are the easiest to care for, you can check out our article on the 10 easiest plants to care for .
To those who are not used to flowers
Low-maintenance varieties that thrive with weekly watering are also a welcome gift for male recipients who aren't very accustomed to flowers, or for people who travel frequently.
After delivery
Houseplant Care: 5 Basic Rules
Most houseplants live for many years with little maintenance. For detailed general care, please see our flower care page, and for seasonal recommendations, see our frequently asked questions about houseplants and their care article.
Adjust watering frequency according to the season.
Watering once a week in winter and twice a week in hot summer weather is a general rule; the exact need is determined by checking whether the top 2-3 cm of soil is dry.
Don't leave water in the pot saucer.
Empty any water remaining in the saucer 15-20 minutes after watering; water accumulating at the roots is the most common cause of root rot.
Match the lighting needs correctly.
Learn your species' light requirements (see "Selecting According to Light" section) and place it accordingly; a plant positioned in the right light will almost take care of itself.
Wipe the leaves regularly.
In broad-leaved species (Monstera, Ficus), dust accumulation reduces photosynthesis; wiping the leaves with a damp cloth once a month will maintain the plant's vitality.
Please ensure there is no access for children or pets.
The sap in the stems and leaves of species like Dieffenbachia and Monstera can cause irritation if chewed; it is recommended to keep these species out of reach.
Which plants purify the air?
According to NASA's Clean Air Study, Dracaena and palm species improve indoor air quality by absorbing chemicals like formaldehyde and xylene; the effect becomes significant with a sufficient number of plants per room, not just a single pot. For more details , see our article on NASA's top 10 plants .

Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions About Houseplants
Here you can find brief answers regarding name, lighting, size, maintenance, and delivery within Istanbul. For order-specific stock and time information, please refer to the product card and payment screen.
What are houseplants, and which are the most popular?
Houseplants are a general term for potted indoor plants grown for decorative purposes in the living area of a home or office. The most popular varieties in our collection include Monstera Deliciosa (or honeysuckle), Yucca (or Yucca tree), Strelitzia Nicolai (or Bird of Paradise), Ficus species (or rubber plant), and Schefflera species; these stand out in living room decor due to their large leaves and showy appearance.
Which plant is suitable for a living room with little light?
For rooms that don't receive direct sunlight but have bright, indirect lighting, Schefflera, Aglaonema (Chinese evergreen), Syngonium (angel's wing), and Phlebodium (blue star fern) are suitable; these species are relatively tolerant of low light levels. Monstera and Ficus species, on the other hand, require more abundant and indirect light; they may shed their leaves if placed in a dark corner.
How often should a houseplant be watered?
As a general rule, watering once a week in winter and twice a week in hot summer weather is sufficient; the exact frequency varies depending on the species and ambient temperature. Watering when the top 2-3 cm of soil is dry, not leaving water in the saucer, and ensuring the pot diameter is suitable for the plant's roots (usually 12-18 cm) will prevent root rot.
Which houseplants should I be careful about if I have children or pets at home?
Chewing the leaves and stems of Dieffenbachia can cause irritation to the mouth and throat; the white liquid in the stems and leaves of Monstera Deliciosa (or elephant's foot) can cause skin and eye irritation, and swelling of the tongue if swallowed. Keeping both species out of reach of young children and cats/dogs reduces the risk of them picking leaves and putting them in their mouths.
Which houseplant cleans the air?
According to NASA's 1989 Clean Air Study, species such as Sansevieria, Dracaena, and Areca palm improve indoor air quality by absorbing chemicals like formaldehyde and xylene. The Dracaena and palm species in our collection are suitable for those wishing to benefit from this effect; the impact becomes significant with a sufficient number of plants per room, not just a single pot.
What should I consider when choosing a large houseplant?
First, compare the ceiling height and the plant's final height (options range from 80 cm to 200 cm in the collection); Yucca, Strelitzia, and Ficus Lyrata designs of 150 cm and above are suitable for corners or next to sofas in spacious living rooms. Secondly, consider the weight of the pot and accessibility (lift, doorway); it is recommended to determine the location beforehand, as large potted plants are difficult to move after delivery.
To whom and in what situations are houseplants given as gifts?
Houseplants are a popular choice for occasions where cut flowers are short-lived, such as moving to a new home, opening an office, a celebration at work, getting well soon, or birthdays. Their long lifespan and low maintenance make them a suitable gift for recipients unaccustomed to flowers or for frequent travelers.
Can houseplants be damaged during delivery?
Ribbon Flowers delivers houseplants upright and securely in their pots using its own courier team; they are also packaged to protect them from cold drafts in winter. It is natural for one or two leaves to curl or slightly bend during transport and this will straighten out within a few days; it is normal for the soil to be moist upon delivery, and it is recommended to delay the first watering until the soil is dry.
Should I repot my houseplant?
The plant arrives in a pot or basket that fits its size; repotting is not necessary in the short term. However, when roots begin to protrude from the drainage hole in the pot, or when rooting intensifies during the plant's growth period, it is recommended to repot it into a pot 3-5 cm larger than the current one; this is usually required every 1.5-2 years.
Can my houseplant be delivered to Istanbul on the same day?
Same-day delivery is available to all 39 districts of Istanbul, provided there is sufficient stock and courier capacity. Orders placed before 16:00 for Beşiktaş, Şişli, Sarıyer, Beyoğlu, and Kağıthane, and before 14:00 for the other 34 districts can be delivered the same day; delivery times can be selected as 10:00-16:00 or 16:00-20:00.
Can I cancel or change my houseplant order?
Live plants are considered perishable and are therefore an exception to the general right of withdrawal. You must submit your cancellation or request for a change of pot or type via WhatsApp, phone, or email before your order is prepared and before delivery. Refunds will be credited to your account within 7-10 days, depending on interbank processing time; details can be found in the Frequently Asked Questions and Distance Selling Agreement .
