Flowers and People:

We are well aware of the positive effects that flowers have on people's feelings and moods. To scientifically prove this wonderful effect, the University of New Jersey has conducted extensive research on the emotional effects of flowers on people.
We can easily notice the positive impact that a single rose given to that special someone in our lives, or a bouquet of daisies gifted to our best friend, has on the other person.
After 10 months of research, the team first announced the results of their study on "The Effects of Flowers on Emotions" on September 22, 2000. According to Dr. Haviland-Jones, flowers evoke far more loving and joyful feelings than previously thought, and transform one's mood into a much more positive and cheerful state from the moment one enters a room containing flowers.

Flowers have an immediate effect on happiness. When given a bouquet of flowers, the people participating in the study received the gift with genuine joy, expressing great pleasure and satisfaction.
Flowers have long-lasting positive effects on emotions. Participants in the study observed that receiving flowers reduced depressive moods and increased happiness, and that this effect lasted for a long time.
Flowers are a symbol of sharing and togetherness. This research also observed where people most often place flowers in their homes. It was observed that after receiving flowers as gifts, people tend to place them in areas of the house accessible to guests, such as the hallway, living room, and sitting room. This is because flowers enhance the atmosphere, evoking a sense of sharing.

Dr. Haviland-Jones concluded by saying, "In my study, I have not encountered anything else that produces the immediate, noticeable, and positive changes in human emotions that a beautiful floral arrangement does."
