Flower Guide · Chrysanthemum
Chrysanthemum varieties are classified according to their flower shape: spider (Anastasia), pompon, spherical, daisy-type, semi-double, anemone-type, spoon-shaped, needle-shaped, and inwardly curved chrysanthemums. They are also divided into three categories based on their intended use: cut chrysanthemums, potted chrysanthemums, and garden chrysanthemums.
The most common varieties you see in flower shops are the spider-shaped Anastasia , the large, spherical standard chrysanthemum , and spray chrysanthemums that produce many small flowers on a single stem.
Chrysanthemums are one of the most diverse flowers in the world: from simple, daisy-like blossoms to large, double flowers as big as a soccer ball, from Anastasia with its long, spider-leaf-like petals to tiny pom-poms. In this guide, we've described chrysanthemum varieties according to their flower shape, use, and color; we've also shared which variety is suitable for which bouquet and arrangement.
How are different types of chrysanthemums classified?
There are thousands of cultivated varieties of chrysanthemums, mostly grouped according to the shape of the flower. Chrysanthemums have been cultivated in China since the 15th century BC; by 1630, more than 500 varieties had been recorded in China alone. They have also been the subject of intensive breeding programs in Japan for centuries.
Horticultural societies generally classify chrysanthemums into 10–13 flower form groups. In floriculture, however, a more practical classification is used: standard (one large flower on each stem) and spray (many small flowers on each stem).

Types of Chrysanthemums According to Their Use
- Cut chrysanthemums: These are varieties with long stems that last a long time in a vase. They are divided into two types: standard (single large flower) and spray (multiple flowers). Anastasia and large globe chrysanthemums belong to this group.
- Potted chrysanthemums: Compact, round in shape, and profusely flowering; used for decorating balconies and terraces in autumn. Because some are sensitive to cold, they are often grown as single-season plants.
- Garden (hardy) chrysanthemums: These are cold-resistant, perennial varieties. They bloom again every autumn and live for many years.
