How to Care for Succulents?

Succulents are a delightful plant that almost everyone finds charming, and they are especially popular as gifts.

Their low maintenance requirements, suitability for all ages and genders, and even their appeal as wedding gifts are among their most attractive features.

However, these lovely plants are living things just like other plants and have certain needs. If you have a succulent, don't just leave it alone and think, "I'll just water it occasionally."

Here are some things to keep in mind to ensure a healthy future for your succulent:

Light

Succulents naturally thrive in high-temperature, low-humidity environments, such as deserts. Plants from this family generally love sunlight. However, exposing a baby succulent to direct sunlight can cause it to burn. If your plant is young and small, you should gradually acclimate it to sunlight. Place it in a location with plenty of light but not direct sunlight.

Change direction

You've placed your succulents in the best-lit spot in your home or office, but what then? If your plant stays in the same position constantly, it won't receive even sunlight. Rotate it to allow the sides that aren't getting direct sunlight to reach the sun as well. For best practice, rotate it a quarter turn once a week.

If your succulents are leaning to one side, it's probably trying to turn themselves towards the sun. If this happens, move them to a spot where they'll receive better light.

Irrigation

Undoubtedly, this is the most frequently asked question. The amount and frequency of watering are more important for these plants than for others. Without the right balance, their roots can rot, their leaves can deteriorate, and they can even die. Succulents, which need more energy during their growth periods, may also need more water during their development periods. More watering is also possible during the spring and summer months.

If you're unsure whether it's time to water, you can do a little test. Insert your finger about 1 cm into the soil. If it feels dry, water, but if it feels moist, postpone watering and check again in a few days.

When watering, wet the soil until water drains from the drainage holes in the pot. If your pot doesn't have drainage holes, be careful to water less frequently. Using a pot with drainage holes is the healthiest option.

Watering succulents using a spray bottle is not a good idea. The resulting misting on the leaves can lead to mold growth and sensitize the roots.

Alternatively, you can place it in a container of water and water it from below.

Keep it clean.

Succulents will accumulate dust on their leaves over time when kept indoors. This can hinder their growth. If this happens, clean the leaves with a slightly damp cloth. Clean until the dust is gone, but use a thin brush for stubborn spots.

Soil

Growing your succulents in just any garden soil isn't the right approach. They will thrive and be happier in special cactus soil.

These plants generally don't need fertilizer. If you want to fertilize them, the best time would be during the spring and summer months when they are most prone to growth.

We mentioned that you should choose pots with drainage. Make sure that water doesn't accumulate in the pot underneath your perforated container. These plants don't like being in a humid area.
